
The Blue and White closed up the year with an entertaining nail biter against #22 NCAA Division 2 Ranked Newman University.
Newman kept the streak against Pratt alive with six straight wins against the Beavers dating back to the 2010-2011 season and an overall record of 7-2 against the Blue and White.
At 125, Kelvys Gonzalez was down early by the second ranked NCAA Division 2 wrestler Dustin Reed. Reed jumped out quickly, grabbing a takedown and recording a pair of two-point near falls to go up 6-0 after one period. He didn't allow a single point, escaping quickly in the second and putting up another six points, and closing out the tech with a takedown in the third.
Beavers were down 5-0 heading into 133 where Demone McClinton showed a lot of heart after fighting off the Flu this week. McClinton found himself down 6-0 and stormed back to win 16-10 with numerous takedowns to cut the team score to 5-3 in favor of the Jets.
At 141, Dy'Juan Carney received a forfeit by the Newman, which results in the team score in favor of the Blue and White 9-5.
At 149, Corey Tyler is still getting used to the line-up after early season injuries and had a tough component in Tyler Mies who is ranked 9th in the nation in the NCAA Division 2 level. Tyler gave up a major decision thus throwing everything he had at Mies making the team score 9-9.
At 157, Jayson Failer started out the first period slow against Forlanda Parker, but got a takedown in the final seconds of the first period and did not look back. The Beavers picked up the decision making the score 12-9 heading into 165.
At 165, Laaiq Hedrick showed a lot of toughness. After sustaining an undisclosed injury down 2-1 rolling out of bounds, the redshirt sophomore ended up being down 3-1 going into the second period. After a little scramble, Hedrick hit a throw and picked up the fall against the Kansas Cup Champion and putting the Beavers ahead in the dual 18-9.
At 174, Jose Cortez dropped his match in a tough fashion to the Kansas Cup Champion Kyle Ryan by FALL cutting the lead to 18-15.
At 184, James Ellis was looking to build on some momentum from the Kansas Cup. He defeated Noah Ornelas by fall at the Kansas Cup to place at the tournament, and looked to score bonus points and even a fall to put the match into an interesting final bout. After being up 6-1 with a stall call in the Beavers' favor, Ellis got out of position and gave up the fall to Ornelas making the score 21-18 for Newman.
At 197, the Beavers are still waiting on Otto Orosco to come back from a concussion, so the blue and white had to forfeit to Dalton Weidl before heading to heavyweight giving Newman the edge at 27-18.
At 285, Brandon Huntley then dropped a decision to a tough opponent by the name of Thor Balvage 5-3 to end the match with a final score of 30-18.
PCC wrestling ends dual season after going 6-4. The Beavers took out five ranked opponents and pushing the issue with the four losses they took despite facing injuries. The Blue and White now set their eyes on the West Central District Wrestling Tournament held in the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena on Feb. 11. They look to build on their productive season and improve upon the 2016 West Central District Wrestling Tournament where the Blue and White had a third place finish and qualified 10 wrestlers for the NJCAA National Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
