PCC volleyball opens the season in the Quiznos Classic

The Pratt Community College volleyball team started the 2017 season on the road in the Quiznos Classic. Hosted by Lamar Community College, the Quiznos Classic saw the Blue and White compete in four games in two days.

First up for the Beavers in the classic was host Lamar Community College. Lamar came out early taking the first set 11-25. PCC rallied in a hard fought second set taking the win in the set at 28-26. The Beavers commanded the lead for most of the third set, but a late rally by Lamar allowed them to take the set at 21-25. In the final set of the match, the Blue and White fell 12-25. PCC falls to Lamar one set to three.

In the second game of the first day, Pratt faced Frank Phillips College. Despite a rally in the second set, the Beavers fell to Frank Phillips 0-3 in sets (15-25; 23-25; 17-25).

The second day saw the Blue and White take on Otero Junior College. Otero's offense prevailed over the scrappy PCC team. PCC loses to Otero 0-3 in sets (15-25; 21-25; 19-25).

Pratt concluded the Quiznos Classic with a match against Trinidad State Junior College. The Beavers attacked with a furious offense, but came up short against Trinidad State 0-3 (22-25; 21-25; 24-26).

In spite of the losses in the Quiznos Classic, several players are starting to take on leadership roles for the Beavers. Taylor Groen-Younger has embraced her role as the setter this year. She ended the classic with 103 assists in four games. In the match against Otero, Groen-Younger was second on the team with 12 digs. Gabrielle Ediger and Paige Brown have stepped forward defensively as freshmen for the Blue and White. Ediger finished the classic with 39 digs while Brown had 28 digs. Jordan Jones and Brooke Menhusen led the attack for PCC during the four game stretch. Jones had 30 kills for the Blue and White while Menhusen had 22 kills.

PCC volleyball returns to the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena for their home opener on Aug. 30. The Beavers will host Cloud County Community College that night. The match will start at 6:30 p.m.
