The Pratt Community College women's basketball team continued their home stand in the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena with a matchup against Southwestern College Junior Varsity. The Beavers ended the contest still undefeated this season. Pratt was able to knock off the Moundbuilders 90-35.
A 55-point margin of victory was set in place from the start of the game. Pratt nearly scored more points in the first 10 minutes of play than Southwestern did during all four quarters. PCC used a tightly-officiated contest to their advantage by attacking the basket and forcing many fouls. The Beavers went on to shoot 30 free throws during the night. An 80 percent team free throw percentage helped Pratt capitalize on their opportunities.
Defensive efforts by Pratt kept the Moundbuilders at bay. The Beavers never allowed more than 10 points in a single quarter. Fourty-eight Southwestern turnovers helped to swing momentum in favor of Pratt. The blue and white came up with 29 steals that contributed to the large number of giveaways from the opponent. Forward Rylee Alexander led the team in steals (6) and, fellow guard Mackenzie Anderson came up with 5 takeaways of her own, all of them coming in a 10-minute window.
When Southwestern was able to get off a shot against the PCC defense, it was often not a high-percentage look. Pratt forced tough shots that eventually led to the Moundbuilders shooting 35 percent as a unit. Pratt also held their opponent to less than 10 percent from the 3-point line. Southwestern only made one 3-point basket in the game.
"It's always great to win. I'm very proud of the fact that we shot 80 percent from the free throw line and that we shared the ball inside-out. No disrespect to the opponent as they were well coached and solid, but the competition will improve a great deal as we move forward this week and next," said Head Coach John Ishee.
PCC women's basketball will make an appearance again in the Beaver Dome when they take on Bethel College Junior Varsity on Nov. 7. Fans of the Beaver Nation can tune in to the game starting at 6 p.m.
