Wrestling goes undefeated at Jayhawk Duals, finishes second in KJCCC

COLBY, Kan.- Though the Beavers saw Cowley County claim the 2019-20 KJCCC Conference Championship, Coach Kepley's crew proved its mettle. Winning all four matchups at the Jayhawk Duals, Pratt finished its regular season 6-1, ending the year as runner-up in the conference.

125 Pounds

Having entered the national rankings earlier this week, #10 Michael Spangler didn't shy away from the newfound spotlight. Spangler won all four of his matchups, including two pins over Northwest Tech's Talyn Perez and Barton's Zach Gomez. Spangler also won a 14-2 major decision over Cloud County's Blayne Harris. Colby left the 125-pound class open, giving Spangler a win by forfeit. 

133 Pounds

As he's done all season, Max Bazan wrestled for the Beavers at 133 lbs. On Sunday, Bazan lost both of his matches by decision, first a 7-4 loss to Northwest Tech's TaJuan Daniels, and then a 8-3 loss to Colby's Rhett Miner. In his opening match earlier today, Bazan lost a 9-2 decision to Cloud County's Blake Leisler, though he rebounded to a decisive 10-2 major decision win over Barton's Javier Duchene. 

141 Pounds

Isaac Richie wrestled for the Beavers, winning his first match by forfeit, as the Mavericks left the weight class open. Richie's final three matches resulted in losses, including a 2-0 decision loss to Colby's Rush Fannon and a loss by pin fall to Cloud County's Aiden Connors. Richie's concluding appearance resulted in a loss by pin fall to Barton's Drew Burgoon. 

149 Pounds 

Also entering the national rankings just a few days ago, #6 Jake Beeson did all he could for the Beavers. Beeson's conference championship started with a forfeit win, followed by three-consecutive wins. Beeson won a 2-0 decision over Colby's Kaena DeSantos, and eventually pinned Cloud County's Nate Normandin. The Arkansas City native closed out the Jayhawk Duals with a 5-3 decision win over Barton's Kolby Droegemier. 

157 Pounds

Juan Urbina wrestled twice for the Beavers at the weight class, losing his opening match by a 11-6 decision. Urbina was eventually disqualified against #8 Dino Blades of Colby, forcing the Beavers to leave the division open for both matches on Monday.

Misael Monarrez went 3-1 over the two days, with his only loss coming on a 7-4 decision against Northwest Tech's Jacobi Deal. Monarrez bounced back to win a grinding 14-13 decision win over Colby's Austin Hacker, and in his first matchup on Monday, Cloud County left the weight class open giving Monarrez the forfeit win. Monarrez concluded his time in Colby with a 7-3 decision win over Barton's Andrew DeArmond. 

184 Pounds

Bobby Williams was the lone Pratt wrestler at 184 pounds. His conference championship opened with a 17-4 major decision loss to #8 Jacari Deal. The Florida native did manage to grab a win in his other match on Sunday, winning a 8-6 decision against Colby's Aiden Smith. Williams saw Cloud County leave the weight class open, securing six free points. In his final matchup, Williams lost a 7-1 decision to Barton's #9 Joey Ewalt. 

197 Pounds

The local kid from Derby, Bryce Westmoreland was a man on a mission. Westmoreland's first three matches resulted in wins by pin fall. Barton left the weight class open in Pratt's final matchup, as Westmoreland gave the Beavers all 24 possible points. 

285 Pounds

Darius Wilkins also provided a jolt for the Beavers, winning both of his matchups on Sunday. Wilkins pinned Northwest Tech's Umari Dixon-Gordon before winning a 3-1 decision against Colby's Jesse Quilimaco. On Monday, Wilkins and Elwin Trejo took a 5-5 score into overtime, though Trejo scored a takedown to claim the 7-5 sudden victory. Barton did not provide a heavyweight against Wilkins, who was given six easy points.

Wrestling's next action will take place at the NJCAA West Central District Tournament in Miami, Oklahoma on February 22.
