Beeson and Spangler claim national semi-final spots

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa- Pratt brought six wrestlers to the NJCAA Wrestling National Tournament, and as of tonight, two still remain.

Jacob Beeson (149 pounds) and Michael Spangler (125 pounds) each were victorious in their first three matches of the 2019-20 tournament, as both wrestlers have already clinched status as All-Americans.

Beeson's morning began with a first period pin fall of Bergen's Corey Eyer, followed by a rapid first period 16-0 tech fall win over Minnesota West's Chase Dorman. Beeson did run into a formidable challenger in his quarterfinal meeting with Iowa Lakes' Deville Dentis.

Beeson was taken down early in the first period, though he eventually scored an escape point to head into the second period down 2-1. Beeson began the period in the bottom position and again used an escape to score a point, as he was tied 2-2 with one period remaining.

Scoring a takedown at the 1:17 mark of the third period, Beeson not only took a 4-2 lead, but sapped Dentis' riding time. Dentis managed to escape to cinch the score to 4-3, but Beeson rode out the little time remaining into a win.

Beeson will square off with Salvador Silva of North Idaho tomorrow morning in the final four matchup.

Spangler began his day in dominant fashion, advancing by way of a 18-2 technical fall to beat Colby's Zach Tucker, followed by a 12-1 major decision against Niagara's Jacob Bell. Like his teammate, Spangler was tested in the quarterfinal round. Iowa Central's Daniel Vargas quickly took down Spangler with at around 2:20 mark of the first period, though Spangler managed to escape. Vargas scored another takedown a minute later, but Pratt's fiery 125-er turned the tide.

Escaping with 48 seconds remaining in the opening period, Spangler forced a takedown seconds later, and advanced position into a four-point nearfall. Spangler entered the second period with a 8-5 lead. The Beaver dominated the second period, outscoring Vargas 5-1 by way of two takedowns. While Vargas managed three takedowns in the third period, Spangler escaped the less advantageous position at each opportunity, eventually winning 16-12.

Spangler is scheduled to face Ellsworth's Dennis McNeal in the semi-final round.

Pratt's four other wrestlers didn't advance past the Round of 16, as Misael Monarrez (174 pounds), Bobby Williams (184 pounds), and Bryce Westmoreland (197 pounds) were each eliminated from competition in the consolation bracket. Heavyweight Darius Wilkins won his initial matchup in the Round of 32, though a loss in the Round of 16 was followed by a second period pin fall defeat in the consolation round.
