Pratt Knocks off #9 Allen County to Start 2-0 in Conference Play

Iola, Kan. - On Wednesday, September 21, the Pratt Community College Beavers traveled to #9 Allen County. The matches every season against the Red Devils have become a rivalry game as Allen County has finished first in the conference with the Beavers finishing runner-up the past two seasons. In addition, Pratt had never beaten the Red Devils while a part of the National Junior College Athletic Association Women's Soccer Divison II.

Wednesday's match took 97 minutes to determine a winner. It ended when freshman Ashlynn Kurtz kicked a beautiful ball from around the 20 yard line that sailed into the right side of the net. The losing streak against Allen County had fallen and the Beavers knocked off the #9 team in the nation.

"This was an important game for us, and to get the three points on the road against a tough, physical team like Allen was huge," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Ashley Cordeiro.

Freshman Charley Prouse was credited with the assist on the game winning goal and sophomore Jade Massing had eight saves in goal on the afternoon. The Beavers have started off conference play 2-0 and will host Central Community College- Columbus tomorrow, September 24 at 2:00 pm at the Pratt Soccer Complex.

"The feeling of scoring the game winning goal was indescribable, it was the best feeling I had ever felt. When I saw the ball hit the back of the net it felt as if it was in slow mo, I felt like I was dreaming. I couldn't hold back tears," said Kurtz. "I had chills all over my body and when my teammates ran to me I knew it was real. We had just beat the best team in the conference and the number 9 team in the nation. It was obvious Pratt and Allen are big competitors so going into this game I knew that I had to do whatever to win this game. Beating Allen for the first time was the most surreal feeling ever."
