Beavers Lose 3-1 Against Northeast Hawks in Plains District Championship

Pratt, Kan. - The #14 Pratt Community College Beavers for the first time in program history hosted the National Junior College Athletic Association Plains District Championship game. The #7 Northeast Hawks from Norfolk, NE were in town to battle the Beavers with the winner advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament. The first half was primarily dominated by the Hawks, but Northeast was unable to score after their first goal was called off due to an offsides call.

The Beavers struck first after halftime with Leticia Tessi scoring the Beavers only goal of the game… her 13 of the season. The Hawks tied the game up at the 57:09 mark. Northeast would go on to score two more goals in the second half to win the game 3-1 and advance to the NJCAA National Tournament. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Massing had 11 saves with a total of 14 shots on goal.

"It is always tough when the season comes to an end, but we have to go out with our heads held high," said Head Women's Soccer Coach Ashley Cordeiro. "We kept fighting until literally the last second. Going down a player from a red card in the first half against a tough team is just really hard as everyone has to work a little harder."

Pratt will await the announcement of at-large bids for the NJCAA National Tournament which is scheduled to begin on November 14 in Tuscan, AZ. The team currently sits at 12-3-1 and is ranked #14 in the nation. For the second straight year, the team broke the program record for most wins with 12, sophomore goalkeepers Massing and Jessi Ferneau broke their own record with most shutouts in a season with eight, Tessi scored the most goals in a single season with 13 and finally the Beavers won their first NJCAA Region VI Championship.

"It is a season I will always remember...it is very historic," said Coach Cordeiro. "A lot of records broken, a lot of things to be proud of, and a lot of positives that came from this season. It will be one that I will always remember."
