PCC wrestling competes in the 2018 Kansas Cup

Coming out of the Cougar Duals winning 2-1, the Pratt Community College wrestling team traveled to Wichita, Kan. to compete in the 2018 Kansas Cup hosted by Newman University. The Kansas Cup saw 12 teams across the state of Kansas compete for wrestling supremacy in the state. The Beavers had a strong showing in the Kansas Cup with an overall score of 77.5 points to take fourth place overall and second out of the two year schools.

The Blue and White started off with the 133 lbs. class. Justin Hershberger faced Kevin Robinson of Cowley winning by decision 12-6. He followed that up with a 4-1 decision win to go into the championship match. Hershberger fought hard and came up short with a 7-8 decision loss for second place in the class.

In the 141 lbs. class, Kevin Kissane competed for the Beavers. Kissane won his first match over Ottawa University's Armand Kenepaske by pinfall. He lost by decision in his next match to fall into the consolation bracket. Kissane rallied in the consolation bracket winning his next two matches (13-5; 8-3) to take third place.

At 149, Dalton Hensley lost his first match of the day to Bryce Schults of Cowley College. This sparked a fire in Hensley as he won his next two matches by tech fall and pinfall. He followed those two matches with decisive 13-1 win over Labette CC's Camron Sharp. In the third place match, Hensley got a rematch against Schults. Hensley would not be denied the second time around taking a 13-4 decision win over Schults for third place.

Nick Lucas competed for the Blue and White at 165 lbs. Lucas lost his first match of the day to Jordan Ward of Bethany College by a close 2-3 decision. Lucas came back in the consolation round with three pinfalls to take fifth place.

Nick Ackerman battled for the Beavers at 197 lbs. Ackerman won his first match of the day with a 5-2 decision over Bethany College's Joe Steve. He then fell to Rakim Dean of Fort Hays State going into the consolation bracket. Ackerman defeated Dylan Johnson of Cowley, but fell to Barton's Ethan Dean to take fourth in the class.

Next up for PCC wrestling is a home dual against Barton Community College on Jan. 25. The matches start at 7 p.m.
