PCC wrestling duals Newman University

Pratt Community College wrestling hosted NCAA division II Newman University in the final home dual for the Beavers in the 2018 season. The Blue and White battled Newman to a 9-12 team score at the intermission. Coming out of the intermission, Newman got several pins to secure the dual victory. PCC falls to Newman 9-39.

Starting off the dual at 125 lbs. was Brayan Balderrama for Pratt against Tyler Lawley for Newman. Balderama and Lawley were deadlocked at 4-4 after the first period. Balderrama fought over the next two periods, but Lawley scored 13 points over that span. Balderrama loses by decision 4-17.

At 133 lbs. Justin Hershberger of PCC faced off against Vincent Eremita. Hershberger controlled the first two periods scoring points and holding a 4-2 lead heading into the third period. In the final minute of the match, Eremita scored a quick four points. Hershberger drops a heartbreaker 4-6 by decision.

Kevin Kissane defeated Brandon Conrad at 141 via forfeit, however the two had an exhibition match regardless of the forfeit. Kissane managed to get a pin victory in the second period of the exhibition bout. PCC trailed Newman 6-7 after the first three matches.

Before the break, Pratt's Justin Skerce faced Tyler Mies. Skerce was defeated by Mies via tech fall, and the Blue and White headed into the intermission trailing 9-12.

Coming out of the break, Nick Lucas squared off against Kyle Ryan at 165. Late in the first period Ryan countered Lucas and slammed him hard to the mat. The official stopped the match to allow Lucas to recover, and after some time decided that Lucas was unable to continue the match and awarded the win to Ryan via injury default.

At 174, Sean Pilger fell to Nate Panagakis in the first round. PCC trailed 9 to 24 with only three matches remaining.

James Ellis of Pratt was ranked #7 heading into his 184 lbs match. Newman met him with NCAA division II #11 ranked Noel Torres. Ellis battled Torres to a 1-4 first period. Torres got the better of Ellis after two periods as Ellis trailed 2-9. Ellis fell in the third period with just seconds left before the end of the match.

At 197, Pratt's Nick Ackerman faced Sage Eckman. The two battled in a heated match. After the first period Ackerman trailed 0-6. Ackerman gained a point for getting to a neutral position in the second period, but the two combatants hit a stalemate as the period would end with Ackerman trailing 1-6. Ackerman scored with a body slam late in the third period, but Eckman was able to hang on. Ackerman lost 3-6 by decision.

In the final bout of the night heavyweights Chris Henderson and Dalton Weidl squared off. The two fought a rather even first period though Weidl gained a small advantage. Henderson trailed 0-2 after one period of action. Henderson tried to control the second period, but was unable to score points against Weidl. Late in the period, Henderson shot in for a body slam and was countered into a pin by Weidl. Henderson fell to Weidl with just 14 seconds remaining in the second period to end the dual in Newman University's favor.

PCC wrestling heads to the NJCAA West Central District Qualifier in Great Bend, Kan. to start the post season on Feb. 10. Matches start that morning at 9 a.m.
