PCC baseball splits weekend series with Iowa Lakes CC

Pratt Community College baseball wrapped up a six game home stand with a four game series against Iowa Lakes Community College over the weekend of Feb. 17 and 18. In a tale of two days, the Beavers extended their win streak to four games before splitting with Iowa Lakes to end the series. PCC takes two out of four games against Iowa Lakes.

Iowa Lakes took no time to get their scoring rolling. Tavan Shahidi hit a three run blast in the first inning to open up the scoring in the first game. Pratt got on the scoreboard with a run in the second inning, but trailed Iowa Lakes 1-3.

The PCC bats came alive in the third inning. Trace Maddux started the scoring with a solo home run. Two Beaver baserunners got on base thanks to an error and a double. Kenneth Gonzalez came to bat and hit a triple to left driving in the two base runners. Two more baserunners were put on to load the bases. First basemen Ashton Roy stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam over the right field fence. After the seven run third inning, the Blue and White were in the lead 8-3.

Pratt added four runs in the fourth inning and a run in the sixth, while Iowa Lakes only added a pair of runs for the remainder of the game. The Beavers take game one 13-5.

Sean McElwee gets the win for the Blue and White from the mound. He threw five innings and had six strike outs while facing 25 batters. Player of the game is PCC's Roy. While only going 1-4 from the plate, his five RBIs led the scoring for both teams.

Game 2 was an even greater long ball fest with seven home runs split between Pratt and Iowa Lakes. Shahidi started things off for Iowa Lakes with a solo home run in the second. Jayden Adrians followed with a double to right and was brought home on a single by Noah Catron to left field. In the bottom of the second, Sean Johnson came to the plate for Pratt and hit a solo home run of his own. PCC trailed Iowa Lakes 1-2 after two complete innings.

PCC broke open the scoring in the third inning with six runs. The Blue and White loaded the bases and had their first run walked in. Roy came to the plate and knocked in two runs with a single to right. Khalir Vazquez followed with a single to left for an RBI. Darrian Aldridge brought Roy and Vazquez home with a triple to right to end the scoring for the inning. Pratt took the lead at 7-2 after three innings.

Iowa Lakes cut into the lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Ashtin Moxey hit a solo home run in the fourth. The Lakers followed this with three runs in the fifth. Spenser Larson grounded out, but brought BJ Johnson home. Mallard Holland followed with a home run. A double by Adrians brought in Shahidi. Heading into the middle of the fifth PCC held the slimmest of leads at 7-6.

PCC put up even more runs in the fifth thanks to three home runs. Roy had a two run home run to begin the scoring. Aldridge and Maddux got on base when Ben Van Diest hit a three run homer. Johnson came through with a double to drive in Gonzalez. Gage Axline followed with a home run to bring Gonzalez and himself in to score. After eight runs in the fifth inning, the Beavers led 14-6.

PCC never looked back from there and took game two by the final score of 17-7. Zach Ponce gets the win from the mound for the Blue and White in game two. In four innings of work, Ponce struck out four batters. Roy is once again the player of the game for Pratt. Roy finished the game going 3-5 with four RBIs and two runs.

In the third game of the series Iowa Lakes came out and got an early lead. The Lakers scored two runs in the first inning and followed with two more in the second. The Beavers managed to score a run in the second and in the fifth inning, but could not get the bats going to come back. PCC falls to Iowa Lakes 2-4.

Dalton Huggins pitched well for the Beavers. Huggins threw six innings giving up three walks and striking out eight of the 28 batters he faced. Maddux led the Beavers at the plate going 1-4 with a hit and an RBI. Player of the game goes to Wayde Beckford of Iowa Lakes. Beckford went one for two with a one hit and two RBIs.

The final game of the series was another battle between Pratt and Iowa Lakes. The Lakers opened up the scoring with two runs in the second. PCC came back and took the lead in the bottom of the second. Axline got on base with a leadoff single to center field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch to put him in scoring position. Aldridge came to the plate and reached thanks to an error on Iowa Lakes that brought Axline home. Maddux came to the plate and scored Aldridge with a double to right field. A single by Elerie Rivera to center brought Maddux in to score. After two innings the Blue and White led Iowa Lakes 3-2.

In the fourth inning the Beavers put up another three runs to add to their lead. Vazquez led off with a double. Aldridge followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Aldridge then stole second and thanks to a ball that sailed to the short stop, Vazquez managed to steal home. Rivera brought Aldridge home with a single to center. Gonzalez doubled to left field scoring Rivera to end the scoring for Pratt. After four innings PCC led 6-2.

Iowa Lakes came back thanks to a three run inning in the sixth. Pratt held onto a one run lead at 6-5 heading into the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Iowa Lakes loaded the bases and managed to score a pair of runs to take the lead. The Beavers trailed and could not battle back in the bottom of the ninth. PCC drops a heartbreaker to Iowa Lakes 6-7.

Lucas Wepf commanded from the mound for the Blue and White. In 4.1 innings pitched he allowed no hits and struck out seven of 18 batters that he faced. Rivera led Pratt at the plate going 2-5 with two RBIs and a run.

Player of the game goes to Jarrod Corona for Iowa Lakes. He went 1-3 with three RBIs.

Through the series with Iowa Lakes, Pratt baseball sits at 4-2 on the season after beginning the year with four straight wins.
