PCC wrestling competes at the 2018 West Central District Qualifier

Pratt Community College wrestling entered the post season by traveling to Goodland, Kan. to compete in the West Central District Qualifier. With spots in the NJCAA national championship on the line, five Beaver wrestlers answered the call and booked their ticket to nationals.

At 125, Bryan Balderrama started things off for the Blue and White. Balderrama fell in his first round match to Marcelino Lopez of Cowley. He then rallied in the consolation bracket with a fall win over Joe Braun of CCC and Nickolas Ornelas of NCCC. Balderrama's day ended when he fell to Dillon Prutch of LCC in the third place bout. Balderrama finished the West Central District Qualifier in fourth place to head to nationals.

Justin Hershberger competed for the Beavers in the 133 lbs class. Hershberger lost his first match to Cody Hey of NCCC by a 5-12 decision. He then secured a fall victory over Cowley's Tyler West and won a close match against LCC's Garret Wild by a 10-9 decision. Hershberger lost his next match to Munkhbat Bat-erdene of Northwest Tech setting up a rematch with Hey for the last spot at 133. In the rematch, Hershberger got the win on a 5-2 decision to move on to nationals.

Nick Lucas made an impact in the 165 lbs class. Lucas started the West Central District Qualifier with a 7-2 decision over Blake Johnson of Cowley. He fell to Wyatt Jordan of NOOK to go into the consolation bracket. There Lucas defeated Austin Many of CCC by fall at 1:13. In the third place match Lucas defeated Gage McBride from Barton by a 6-3 decision to take third in the weight class and secured a spot at nationals.

In the 184 lbs. class, JT Ellis rounded out the qualifiers for PCC. Ellis won his first match of the day against Elias Manzanares by fall at 0:50. He then lost by decision to Alex Kauffman 2-8. In his first consolation match Ellis won a close match against Andrew Garber by decision 5-4. Ellis fell in the third place match to Barton's Trent Miles to take fourth place in the weightclass.

These four wrestlers will be joined by Kevin Kissane to represent PCC wrestling at the NJCAA national championship meet on Feb. 23. Matches for the meet will begin that morning at 9 a.m.
