PCC baseball battles Colby CC

Pratt Community College baseball closed out a five game road stretch with a double header against Colby Community College. In game 1, the Beavers fought to the end falling on a walk-off, three run home run. Game 2 had Pratt battling to avenge the loss in the first game. Colby used three home runs in the fifth inning to dash the hopes of a split double header. Pratt drops both games going 0-2 in the double header.

Colby scored first in Game 1 with a run in the second inning and two runs in the third. In the fourth inning, Kenneth Gonzalez reached first with a walk. Sean Johnson stepped to the plate and blasted the ball over the left field fence for a two run home run. Ashton Roy followed up with a bomb of his own over center field for back to back home runs. At the end of the fourth PCC had tied the game up at 3-3.

The Blue and White added a run in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Colby tied things up with a home run in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Pratt made reclaimed the lead with three runs. Darrian Aldridge reached on an error. Trace Maddux stepped to the plate and hit a two run home run to take the lead. With Johnson on first he broke on a pitch to steal second base. The throw was off allowing Johnson to advance all the way home to give the Beavers a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Colby led off the inning with two singles to put runners on the corners. Pratt got an out keeping a runner on first, but allowing the run from third to score. A single to right put runners on first and second with one out. Then #7 stole the game with a walk-off, three run home run over left field. PCC drops a heartbreaker in Game 1, 7-8.

Roy led the Beavers at the plate in Game 1. Roy finished three for four at batt with two RBIs and a run. Sean McElwee threw the complete game from the mound. He threw 6.1 innings with five strike outs and allowing two walks while facing 32 batters.

The second game saw Colby take an early lead scoring five runs in the first two innings. Pratt answered with four runs in the third inning. The Beavers loaded the bases and Gonzalez and Johnson hit back to back doubles to drive the runs home. Colby answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to extend the lead back to four runs. PCC used back to back home runs by Gage Axline and Keaton Gage in the fourth and back to back home runs by Johnson and Roy in the fifth to close the lead to a run. Going into the bottom of the fifth PCC trailed 8-9.

In the bottom of the fifth Colby hammered the ball with three multi-run home runs in the inning. The Beavers tried coming back with runs in the sixth and seventh, but could not overcome the lead. PCC loses 10-22 in Game 2.

At the plate, Elerie Rivera, Khalir Vazquez, Axline, and Johnson commanded the offense for the Blue and White. Rivera batted two for four. Vazquez was a perfect three for three at the plate with a run. Axline finished three for four with two runs and an RBI. While Johnson ended the game two for four, he led the team in RBIs with three.

PCC looks to even up the four game series with Colby CC with a double header on March 9. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
