PCC baseball begins a four game series with Barton CC

Pratt Community College baseball returned to Stanion Field to begin a four-game series with #15 Barton Community College. The Beavers and Barton used the long ball to their advantage in the double header. In the first game, a three-run home run by Carl Cooper gave Pratt the edge over Barton for a 5-3 win. Game 2 saw Pratt and Barton trade runs in the early innings. Big innings in the fourth and eighth allowed Barton to take the lead and secure the win. PCC loses the second game 6-13.

The first game was a defensive deadlock for the first four innings with neither team scoring. Pratt was the first to score in the fifth inning when Cooper scored from third base on a passed ball. Barton answered in the sixth with three runs. Pratt came right back in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second, Keaton Gage singled to center field to bring in Eric Escamilla. Cooper came to bat with the Blue and White trailing 2-3. He hit a shot over the right field fence for three runs and the lead. The Pratt defense held in the top of the seventh for a 5-3 win.

In game one, the bats were popping for the Beavers. Elerie Rivera and Ashton Roy finished two for three at the plate. Kenneth Gonzalez batted two for three with a run. Cooper ended the game two for three at the plate with a team high three RBIs and two runs. On the mound Sean McElwee struck out five of the 27 batters he faced while allowing six hits, three runs and a walk.

Game two was a battle in the early innings. Barton got a run in their first chance at bat. The Blue and White managed to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second. Barton answered with a two-run home run in the third inning before putting four runs across in the fourth. Pratt cut into the lead with runs in the fifth inning and ninth, but could not put a rally together. PCC falls 6-13.

Gage Axline led the Beavers at the plate in game 2. Axline batted four for five with two runs and an RBI. Rivera went one for four with two runs. Escamilla ended the game one for three with two RBIs.

PCC baseball travels to Great Bend, Kan. for the final two games of the series with Barton on March 31. First pitch is set for 1 p.m with the second game starting around 3:30 p.m.
