PCC baseball closes out four game series with Garden City CC

Pratt Community College baseball wrapped up their four game series with Garden City Community College with a double header in Garden City, Kan. The Beavers and Broncbusters battled in two tightly contested games. In the end, Garden City used the home field advantage to take both games in walk-off fashion. PCC drops two heartbreakers to Garden City 5-6 in game three in the series and 11-12 in game four.

In the first game, Garden City scored first with a run in the third inning. The Blue and White took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. With a runner on first, Trace Maddux hit a triple to right field to score the first run for Pratt. Sean Johnson came up and hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring Maddux home for the run and the lead. Garden City tied the game in the fifth with a triple of their own. Maddux came through with a single in the top of the sixth driving in Elerie Rivera from second. Garden City reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. Rivera singled to right to score Ben Van Diest and Carl Cooper scored on an error to give the Beavers a one run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Garden City scored a runner from second and put another on third. A walk-off single brought in the runner from third.

Gage Axline, Maddux, and Rivera led the Beaver offense in the third game of the series. Axline batted two for four with a run. Maddux hit two for three with a pair of RBIs and a run. Rivera finished the game two for four with a run and an RBI. On the mound, Sean McElwee threw a six inning no decision for the Blue and White. McElwee struck out four and walked one of the 29 batters he faced.

Garden City jumped out to an early lead in the final game in the series. After two inning PCC trailed 0-4. The Beavers rallied in the fifth inning with four doubles in five at bats to tie the game 4-4. In the sixth inning, the bats continued to be hot for the Blue and White as five consecutive hits led to five runs giving Pratt a 9-4 lead. Garden City came back to take the lead with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. PCC tied the game at 10-10 with a run in the eighth on a single by Johnson that brought Keaton Gage home. The Beavers scored another run in the ninth to take an 11-10 lead into the bottom half of the inning. With bases loaded, Garden City tied the game with a sacrifice fly. The next batter singled to center for Garden City to take the walk-off win.

In the final game, Gage hit two for four with a team high three runs. Axline ended the game two for five with two runs and two RBIs. Maddux batted three for six with two runs and two RBIs. Johnson finished the game three for five leading the Blue and White with three RBIs. Zach Courbat started on the mound for Pratt in game four. In five innings of work, Courbat struck out seven and walked three of the 26 batters he faced.

PCC baseball returns to Stanion Field for a game against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on April 17. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
