Pratt, Kan. - Pratt Community College (PCC) is excited to welcome back to PCC, Kurt McAfee as the interim director of athletics. McAfee started on Monday, June 2 and hit the ground running with coaches' meetings and preparations for the 2025-26 academic year starting in August. He will remain in the interim role through the remainder of 2025.
Before returning to PCC, McAfee was the athletic director at Wichita Collegiate School from August 2022 till his official retirement this past May. In addition, he served as the athletic director of The Independent School in Wichita, Kan. from August 2016 to June 2022. During his time at The Independent School, McAfee received his national board certification as a registered athletic administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).
“It feels wonderful to be back home! Having grown up in Pratt, my connections to the community and Pratt Community College run deep, as does my appreciation for the people here,” said interim athletic director Kurt McAfee. “After retiring from Wichita Collegiate, I was ready to embrace the next chapter until Dr. Calvert reached out about the Interim Athletic Director position. Few could have convinced me to delay retirement, but my immense respect for Dr. Calvert, a leader I’ve long admired, made the decision effortless. The chance to work alongside him again was simply too meaningful to pass up.”
From June 2006 to August 2016, McAfee served as the director of athletics at Pratt Community College. During his time at PCC, he raised $385,000 to renovate the Denis Lesh Sports Arena, added a soccer pitch to the Stanion Sports Complex, and raised all the funds for a new indoor softball hitting facility. He was named the Bryce Roderick Award of Excellence Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) region six Athletic Director of the Year at PCC. McAfee was the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) region six director and was the chair of the NJCAA cross country committee and served on the football, basketball, and baseball committees.
“I am extremely excited to welcome back Kurt McAfee to Pratt Community College as Interim Director of Athletics. Kurt attended PCC, played baseball, and held this position for ten years earlier in his career, stated PCC President Dr. Michael Calvert. “Kurt even hired several of the coaches currently on staff at PCC. He has great community connections, having grown up in Pratt and still having family here,” continued Calvert. “Kurt has immense knowledge of the KJCCC and NJCAA having served in many leadership roles during his time at PCC. Our athletic department could not be in better hands.”
Before working at PCC, McAfee served as the director of marketing projects for Wichita State University (WSU) from November 2005-June 2006. In addition, he served as the vice president of marketing and event planning for the Wichita Sports Commission from July 1998-November 2006. Finally, McAfee has served as an official and is the past president of the Kansas Collegiate Officials Association and serves as a play clock operator for the Big 12 Conference.
