Late rally not enough for Beavers in Liberal

LIBERAL, Kan.- Down by as many as 14 in the second-half, a late Beavers push wasn't quite enough to snatch a victory in the waning moments.

Deontae Davis posted a game-high 19 points, as he shot 41 percent from the field (7-17). Four of his seven connections were from three-point range, while Davis added eight rebounds to his stat line. Jamel Horton was again in double-figures for the Beavers, finishing with 15 points and a team-high three assists. Zool Kueth not only recorded 14 points, but set a career-high in blocks with five. Finishing the evening with 10 rebounds, Harrison Eghan also reset his career-high in the category.

The Beavers controlled most of the first-half action, leading by as much as nine points and as late as the four-minute mark of the half, the game quickly swerved in favor of the Saints. A 12-3 Seward County run at the end of the first 20 minutes sent game knotted up at 30-30 to the halftime break.

The Saints carried that momentum into the final 20 minutes, jumping out to a 49-35 lead at the 14-minute mark of the second-half. However, the Beavers would not lay down so convincingly. Seward County's lead eventually disappeared, as Pratt managed to jump out to a 62-60 lead with just over three-minutes remaining. The Saints managed to gain a slim 66-63 lead with seconds to spare, leaving the Beavers with a chance to send the game to overtime. Deontae Davis, heavily guarded, missed a late three-point attempt, allowing Seward County to drown out the remainder of the clock.

Men and women's basketball will be back at the Beaver Dome on Saturday, January 18, as Hutchinson Community College travels to Pratt. Tip-offs are 5:30 and 7:30.
