Beavers taken down late by Trojans, lose 85-75

PRATT, Kan.- Following four-consecutive wins, the Beavers ran into a buzzsaw, losing 85-75 against the first-place Trojans.

Jamel Horton again led the Beavers with 24 points, where he shot 48 percent from the field (10-21). Zool Kueth and Deontae Davis both scored 16 points, shooting a combined 7-14 from beyond the arc. Kueth also led the Beavers with six rebounds.

The Beavers knew they were in for a stiff test against a team receiving national top-25 votes, and the Trojans proved to the Beaver faithful they are indeed among the best teams in the Jayhawk Conference. The Trojans finished the evening shooting 55 percent (33-60), a credit to an athletic team finishing near the rim. Colby also won the turnover margin, surrendering possession only nine times compared to Pratt's 17. The Beavers were nearly perfect from the free throw line (8-9), however, Colby's explosive guards created more opportunities for easy points, as they were 14-23 from the free throw stripe.

Down 25-14 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Beavers continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to 40-32 at the halftime break. Pratt carried that same energy into the second-half, trailing 54-53 at the 12-minute mark of the second-half. However, the Trojans continued to showcase their elite athleticism by creating high-percentage attempts near the rim. Colby eventually jumped out to a 69-57 lead with five minutes and change remaining in the game. The Beavers catch-up efforts were for naught, as Colby didn't allow any openings for a comeback.

The men will have a few days to recover before playing Barton in Great Bend on Wednesday, February 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
