Men's basketball wins 79-71, sweeps season series with Barton

GREAT BEND, Kan.- After beating Barton 91-80 at the Beaver Dome on January 13, Pratt hit the road north for the opportunity to take both games against its conference rivals. Let's just say the Beavers succeeded.

Zool Kueth's 21 points ignited the Beavers to a 79-71 win against the Cougars, his eight game of 20-plus points this season. Kueth was 7-15 from the field (47 percent), inlcuding 4-8 from three-point range. He also recorded three rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Jamel Horton added 17 points on 50 percent shooting (7-14) to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.

As he tends to be, Deontae Davis was a long-range weapon for the Beavers, as all 15 of his points were stamped from long range (5-8). Julian Eziukwu posted his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 10 points to go with 11 rebounds. Harrison Eghan came off of the bench to grab 10 rebounds as well.

The Beavers defense once again was an issue for the Cougars, as Barton was connected on only 33 percent of its field goal attempts (21-64) while forcing 18 Barton turnovers. Trailing 24-18 with just under eight minutes remaining the in the first-half, the Beavers did their best to silence to the home crowd, bolting out on a 17-4 run to grab a 35-28 lead with three minutes and change left in the first 20 minutes. Pratt eventually took a 41-33 lead into halftime.

Coach Flynn's bunch managed to impressively control the second-half, not allowing the Cougars to get within closer than two-points for the remainder of the game. Leading 73-71 with just under a minute left to go, a Tommy Thomas layup put the Beavers back up by four points. Eziukwu was hit with a foul with 34 seconds left on the clock, though Barton's Mavrick Gildyard missed both free throw attempts. Forced to foul, Barton put Kueth on the line with 24 seconds remaining, where he connected on both attempts. The Beavers drowned out the rest of the clock to claim an ever-important road conference win.

Now 15-9 and 9-6 in the KJCCC, the Beavers will host Seward County on Saturday, February 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
