MBB opens 2021 season with lopsided win

PRATT, Kan.- For the town of Pratt, Friday marked a feeling of normalcy. Following the cancellation of spring competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pratt Community College hosted its first athletic event of any kind since the virus latched on to the world by its scruff.

The Beavers welcomed the return of athletics with open arms, thrashing the visiting Sterling College (JV) Warriors 110-68.

Malcolm Whitlow posted a game-high 21 points, connecting on 8-15 attempts (53%). In his Pratt debut, Whitlow also managed eight rebounds and was tied for the team lead with five assists. Pratt's frontcourt presense of Harrison Eghan and Julian Eziukwu supplied ample scoring as well, notching 20 and 17 points, respectively. Eghan's work on the glass a season ago was crucial for the Beavers and was yet again on Friday, leading all players with 12. Eziukwu also snatched nine boards of his own.

Cam Morris came off the bench to provide an offensive spark, totaling 16 points and nine rebounds in his first game as a Beaver.

As a team, the Beavers connected on 42 of 84 attempts from the field (50%), while forcing 17 Sterling College turnovers. Pratt owned the glass as well, outrebounding the Warriors 54-22, including a 24-6 disparity on the offensive end.

The scoring was fast and furious, as the Beavers jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the game's first three and a half minutes, and never looked back. The Beavers extended the lead to 32-15 at the 10-minute mark before taking a 59-37 lead into the halftime break. The second-half was more of the same for Coach Flynn's squad, as Pratt outscored Sterling College 51-31 over the game's final 20 minutes.

The Beavers will enjoy an extended break, as Pratt will have eight days to prepare for a trip to Coffeyville when the Beavers battle the Red Ravens on January 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 PM.
