Beavers Chomped Mavericks for First Conference Win

Pratt, Kan- On Saturday afternoon the Beavers entered the dome for a battle against the Northwest Kansas Technical College (NWKTC) Mavericks. After a back and forth start to the game the Beavers took a 35-21 lead into halftime. The Mavericks came storming back into the game and lead the second half 43-34. Thanks for two big three point baskets by redshirt sophomore guard Eric Rhymes and quality made free throws in the closing minutes of the game the Beavers came out victorious 69-64. It was the first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) win for interim head coach Kenny Eddy and the men's basketball program this season. 

"The guys came into the game ready to fight and that's what they did. We were really proud of our defense in the first half. Holding them to 17% shooting going into break," said Interim Head Coach Kenny Eddy, "I thought we let up a little and NWKT came out swinging in the second. The guys were pumped about getting their first conference win of the year. They stuck together at the end of the game and that's what will make this group successful." 

Sophomore guard Tommy Thomas lead the team with 18 points. The leading scorer for the season, sophomore Cam Morris picked up a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. As a team the Beavers had 44 rebounds, 22 assists, and 14 blocks. The team also cut down on turnovers from 30 in the last game to 17. 

For the Mavericks freshman guard Ethan Yancey lead the way with 24 points. Sophomores Hantz Louis-Jeune had 15 points, Myles Arnold had 10 points, and Lino Manhom had 14 points and lead the team with 7 rebounds. 

The Beavers have a quick turnaround this week as they will travel to Hutchinson to take on the Blue Dragons on Tuesday, November 23rd. The game will tip at 7:30 pm. Stay tuned to gobeaversports.com and social media for a preview of tomorrow's game.
