Beavers Faced Two Top 20 Teams This Week

The Pratt Community College men's basketball team was in action this past week with three conference matchups. They faced Cloud County on Saturday, January 6 in the Beaver Dome and lost 80-49. The team then traveled to face the No. 8 ranked Cowley Tigers on Wednesday, January 10 and played tough, but unfortunately lost 83-76. Finally, the Beavers hosted No. 20 ranked Butler on Saturday, January 13 with the Beavers losing 70-67 in overtime. Up next for the 5-10 Beavers is a trip to Goodland, Kan. on Wednesday, February 17 to face the Northwest Tech Mavericks. 

Cloud County (January 6) Recap 

Cloud County Community College faced Pratt Community College on January 6 in the Beaver Dome. Cloud County won the game with a final score of 80-49.  

Cloud County started the game strong, building a 31-15 lead with 3:56 left in the first half. Pratt went on a run of their own to end the first half with a 35-22 deficit. Cloud County continued their run in the second half, scoring 45 points compared to Pratt's 27.  

The Beavers shot only 33.3% from the field and 13.3% from beyond the arc. Caleb Smith was the leading scorer for Pratt with 13 points, followed by Davonte "Bubba" Russ with 12 points. 

Cheikh Sow was a standout player for Cloud County, contributing 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists in 24 minutes of play. The T-Birds shooting percentage was 56.1% from the field, 43.5% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the free-throw line. 

Cowley (January 10) Recap 

In a thrilling basketball matchup on January 10, 2024, Cowley County Community College emerged victorious against Pratt Community College with a final score of 83-76. 

The game started with Cowley County taking an early lead, outscoring Pratt Community College 44-34 in the first half. Cowley County's Arzhonte Dallas led the team with 27 points. Pratt Community College's Caleb Smith led his team with 23 points. 

Pratt fought back in the second half, outscoring Cowley 42-39. Kayvontay Williams played a crucial role in Pratt's comeback, scoring 26 points and providing a strong offensive presence. However, Cowley's Avante Nichols and Jeff Nwankwo made key contributions, scoring 10 points each and helped their team maintain their lead. 

The Beavers shot 43.1% from the field and 30.0% from beyond the arc. They had a 70.0% free-throw shooting percentage. Cowley County shot 41.3% from the field, with a 33.3% three-point shooting percentage. Their free-throw accuracy was 85.7%. 

Butler (January 13) Recap 

Butler Community College narrowly defeated Pratt Community College with a final score of 70-67 in a thrilling basketball game on January 13, 2024. The game was closely contested, with both teams putting up a strong fight until the very end. 

In the first half, Pratt Community College took an early lead, outscoring Butler by 12 points. However, the Grizzlies made a comeback in the second half, outscoring Pratt Community College by 10 points. The game went into overtime, where Butler managed to secure the victory by outscoring the Beavers by 3 points. 

For Pratt, Davonte "Bubba" Russ was the leading scorer with 19 points. Caleb Smith and Jarrett Dingle also had solid performances, scoring 11 and 15 points, respectively. Anthony 'AJ' Williams was a key player for Butler, playing for 40 minutes and contributing 11 points. Both teams had a relatively low shooting percentage, with Butler shooting 41.7% from the field and the Beavers shooting 39.0%.
