Second-half surge pushes Beavers past Mavs in OT

PRATT, Kan.- Trailing by as much as 12 points early into the second-half, the Beavers overcame 12 first-half turnovers to beat Northwest Kansas Technical College in overtime, 63-56.

Tytiana Haamid was 7-13 from the field (54 percent), posting 18 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games. Rachel Tippens finished with 10+ points for the third time in four games, posting 17 points and six rebounds. Tippens shot 50 percent from the field (4-8), including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line, where each make was more important than the next. 

The afternoon began as a mighty struggle for Pratt, and as a team, the Beavers shot only 38 percent (8-12) in the first-half, and 1-7 from three-point range (14 percent). The Beavers also commited 12 first-half turnovers, the bulk of which came in the second quarter (10). Even so, the tide turned as the Beavers came out of the halftime locker room.

Trailing 29-22 at the start of the third quarter, Northwest Tech scored the first five points of the quarter, extending its lead to a game-high 12 points. The Mavericks sustained such a lead with as little as 72 seconds remaining in the period. Still, the Beavers managed to trim the lead to 42-35 entering the last 10 minutes of regulation. The Pratt deficit was 10 points with 7:37 to go in the fourth quarter, but that's when Coach Ishee's team made its move.

The Beavers closed the quarter on a 19-9 run, sending the contest into the extra five minutes. In the second-half, Pratt was 12-13 from the free throw line, including 8-9 in the fourth quarter. 

Pratt carried its confidence into the overtime period, outscoring Northwest Tech 9-2. The Beaver defense forced the Mavericks to shoot 14 percent down the stretch, and 0-4 from beyond the arc. 

Now 15-13 overall and 9-10 in the KJCCC, the Beavers will play at home on Wednesday against Dodge City, as the Beavers celebrate Sophomore Day.
