Women's basketball sees season end in Region VI opening round

PRATT, Kan.- In the midst of a historic night at the Beaver Dome where both basketball teams hosted Region VI Tournament opening round games for the first time in school history, women's basketball was unable to escape Neosho County's three-point volley, losing 84-64.

Two of the Beavers more recognizable sophomores, Rylee Alexander and Janell Douvier, went out on their shields. Alexander posted 20 points and a career-high 21 rebounds in the losing effort, while Douvier was responsible for a 19-15 line. Departing sophomore Tytianna Haamid was also credited with 11 rebounds.

As a team, the Beavers dominated the rebounding margin, snatching 59 rebounds compared to the Panthers' 40. Pratt also owned the glass on their end of the floor, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds, while Neosho County managed only seven. But despite the one-way traffic in terms of offensive rebounds, the Panthers scored more second-chance points (13) than the Beavers (11). In total, the Beavers were only 23-83 from the field (27.7 percent), including 9-32 from three-point range (28.1 percent). In contrast, of Neosho County's 27 makes from the field, 17 were from behind the three-point line. In addition to Pratt's struggles from the field, Coach Ishee's team saw that same indifference translate to the free throw line, where the Beavers were only 9-18.

The Panthers came out firing in the first quarter, connecting on seven of 14 three-point attempts, the bulk of their first quarter offense. Despite shooting only 19 percent from the field over the first 10 minutes, the Beavers trailed 23-16 heading into the second quarter. However, six of Pratt's 17 turnovers took place in before halftime, as the Beavers were unable to convert their second-chance opportunities into points. The Beavers went into the locker room down 42-33.

Neosho County left an opening in the third quarter, shooting only 30 percent and the law of averages evening things out in the three-point department, making only four of their 13 attempts. Even so, Pratt converted only three of its 10 free throw attempts in the quarter, despite once again dominating the boards. Down 60-50 to start the final quarter, the Beavers shot only 19 percent over the game's concluding 10 minutes, including two of 10 from three-point range. Neosho County found the same offensive energy from the first quarter, shooting 54 percent from the field (7-13) while making all three of its three-point tries. Forced to foul, the Beavers watched the Panthers increase their lead at the free throw line, leaving little doubt in the game's result.

The Beavers finish the 2019-20 season 17-14 overall, and 11-11 in conference play.
