Beavers pull away in strong second-half to beat NWT

PRATT, Kan.- On Pink Day, the Beavers saved their brightest moments for the second-half. A low-scoring opening 20 minutes was set aside, as the Beavers outscored the Mavericks 43-25 down the stretch to nab a 60-40 win.

Jaylyn Taylor led all players with 15 points, also securing nine rebounds and a pair of assists. Taylor was an efficient 3-5 from long-range as well. Christy Wiebe came off of the bench to provide 12 points, as a chunk of her scoring came from behind the three-point line (3-7). Jada Moss controlled the glass for Pratt, as she came down with a career-high 20 rebounds. Saturday marked the sixth occasion in 10 games where she's managed at least 10 rebounds.

Neither team was largely effective from the field, but the Beavers shot a season-best 41% from three-point range (9-22), while outrebounding Norhwest Tech 51-34. Coach Kenner also benefitted from a more well-rounded offense, as the Beavers bench provided 28 points to the Mavericks' 2.

The first-half could be described as an offensive struggle for both teams. The 17-15 halftime score was mostly the byproduct of the Beavers and Mavericks shooting a combined 11-65 (17%), but the Beavers didn't allow the initial 20 minutes of play to linger over the concluding 20 minutes.

Pratt was 8-13 from three-point range in the second-half, and 13-26 from the field overall in the final two quarters. The Beavers didn't allow the opportunity for second-chance points, outrebounding Northwest Tech 22-10 in the third and fourth quarters. The win marks the first time in 2021 that Pratt has managed back-to-back victories.

Women's basketball (4-6, 3-6) will travel to Hutchinson on Wednesday for a 5:30 pm matchup with the Blue Dragons.
