WBB gets back on track against Conqs

DODGE CITY, Kan.- Succumbing to consecutive defeats, the Beavers found themselves back in the column after defeating the Conquistadors 69-63 on Monday.

Jada Moss gave the Beavers everything she could muster, leading all players in points (17) and rebounds (16). Monday became Moss' eighth double-double of 2021, as she also padded her stats with a pair of steals and assists. Jaylyn Taylor managed 12 points, where she was 3-5 from three-point range. Cassie Onwugbfor finished in double-figures as well, scoring 10 points of her own.

In spite of the Beavers season-high 29 turnovers, Pratt's perimeter shooting and defense in the backcourt provided enough of a boost to prevail. The Beavers were 7-19 (37%) from behind the arc, while limiting the Conquistadors to only five makes on 27 tries (19%) from three-point range. The Beavers also outrebounded Dodge City 48-36.

Coach Kenner's team did well to jump out in front early, shooting 50% from the field in the first quarter to take a 22-16 lead following the first 10 minutes of play. Both teams struggled in the second quarter, as Pratt held a 34-28 lead into halftime. Dodge City was the more proficient team at the restart of play, starting the third quarter with a 13-2 run to retake a 41-36 lead after the first four minutes of the third quarter. However, the Beavers regained control of the game, ending the quarter on a 16-7 run to lead 52-48 heading into the final quarter of play.

Pratt continued to give Dodge City fits as the fourth quarter unfolded. The Beavers began the quarter with nine unanswered points to lead 61-48 with just over six minutes left on the clock. The Conquistadors slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually trimming the deficit to 65-61 with 1:55 left. But the Beavers used a pair of Chariah Daniels free throws and a turnover to add four late points to lead 69-61 with 43 seconds to go. The lead became too much to overcome as time expired.

The Beavers (8-12, 7-12), will conclude the regular season on Wednesday against Seward County.
