Three Beavers take first at West Central Districts

HOISINGTON, Kan.- Marching towards the National Championships next month, the sixth-ranked Beavers traveled to the annual West Central District Championships as a postseason appetizer. Jacob Beeson, Dayton Porsch, and Juan Urbina each won their respective brackets while five others placed in the top three.

At 149 pounds, Jacob Beeson began his day with a win by forfeit, as Cloud County's Joel Ostrom didn't wrestle because of injury. Beeson then won via 16-0 technical fall and by 9-1 major decision to reach the 1st place match. Against Malik Johnson of Cowley County, Beeson began the first period with a takedown at the 2:22 mark. Johnson reversed position to even the score, but Beeson managed an escape with 17 seconds remaining in the period to take a 3-2 lead. The second period saw Johnson even the score with an initial reversal, but Beeson eventually managed an escape to keep the score tied at 4-4. Beeson began the third period in bottom position, which he quickly escaped. The 5-4 score remained through the end of the match, giving Beeson the tournament win.

Dayton Porsch wrestled at his usualy 157 pounds, and did not surrender a point in his three contests. Porsch won his first two matches by technical fall before landing in the final round against Barton's Dawson Chavez. Halfway through the first period, Porsch scored a takedown and quickly secured a pin fall seconds later. Juan Urbina, who has really taken control of the 165-pound weight class for the Beavers, wrestled to a 3-1 decision win in his opening match, and then by fall in the semifinal round. Paired against Cowley County's Alex Rodriguez in the championship round, a six-point first period accounted for most of the damage in his 10-1 major win.

Jason Henschel placed second in the 133-pound bracket, forcing to bow out in the final match because of injury. Devon Dawson also placed second in the heavyweight portion of the tournament, while Deston Miller received silver after a decision loss in the championship match of the 184-pound bracket. Michael Spangler and Jacob Mitchell placed third in their respective weight classes.

Next, the Beavers will look to clinch their first-ever conference title on April 1, when Colby and Labette travel to Pratt in the Beavers last regular season dual.
