Lady Beavers hold their own in loss to Hutchinson

The Pratt Community College women's soccer team returned home for a conference match against Hutchinson Community College. The Beavers fell to 3-3 overall while at home after suffering a defeat. The Blue Dragons took down Pratt 2-0.

PCC ended with a loss, but not without several merits from their performance. Although they went scoreless on the day, several shot opportunities for the Beavers nearly found the back of the net. A through ball from midfielder Ariana Temblador almost made the difference in the first half. Forward Quemberli Merida found herself onside for the ball from Temblador and used the opportunity to take a strike that landed just wide of the upper-right corner of the goal.

Merida leads the Beavers this season with four goals. The freshman forward took all three of the Beavers' shots on frame during the competition. Pratt managed to win battles in the midfield and find their way into the attacking third, but they were unsuccessful getting the ball past the keeper.

On the defensive end PCC made strides to keep Hutchinson at bay. Goalkeeper Haven Johannsen erased 10 of the 12 shots on target that the Beavers faced. A single goal each half put the Beavers behind. However, Pratt allowed only two goals from the 20 shots that Hutchinson posted.

"I'm proud of the whole team's effort for the full 90 minutes. After a bad loss on Wednesday, we knew we had to come out with intensity against another huge opponent," said Head Coach Ashley Burnett.

PCC women's soccer hosts their next home match against Hesston College on Sept. 25. The ladies will kick off at 2 p.m.
