Women's soccer loses hard-fought battle at home

The Pratt Community College women's soccer team played Cloud County Community College for a Jayhawk West conference match at home in Pratt, Kan. To the surprise of many fans the Beavers and T-Birds went head-to-head in the cold and rainy weather for a full 90 minutes. Cloud County came away with a 3-1 victory in the end.

Pratt was the first to put themselves on the board. The Beavers held a lead after the twenty-fourth minute when forward Quemberli Merida booted a shot in goal. Merida was put on a run from goalkeeper Haven Johannsen after a goal kick took off in the wind toward the opposing team's goal. A strong foot earned Johannsen her team's only assist of the day.

Johannsen contributed much more than her irregular assist in goal. The freshman gave her best effort between the pipes by rejecting 13 of the 16 shots on frame that Cloud took. Double-digit saves in back-to-back matches now puts Johannsen at 82 saves on the year in only 10 appearances.

On the defensive side of the pitch the Beavers were led by center back Ashton Johnson who made continuous efforts to keep Cloud County away from the goal. Several tackles and timely interceptions by Johnson disrupted the offensive flow of the opposition. Defense in the first half particularly helped PCC maintain a winning score.

The Beavers' lead held until the forty-second minute mark when Cloud equalized just before the half. The T-birds also managed to net two more scores in the second period that helped secure a win over the Beavers.

PCC women's soccer plays next against Northwest Kansas Technical College on Oct. 10. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
