PCC Volleyball holds their own in loss to No. 17 Hutchinson

The Pratt Community College volleyball team hosted nationally ranked No. 17 Hutchinson Community College for their first home match of the season. Both sides provided a high-scoring contest that allowed for a crowd pleasing brand of volleyball. Hutchinson ultimately took the victory but not without the fight of their life from the Beavers. After a closely contested match Pratt ended the night with a loss 0-3 (23-25; 26-28; 12-25).

Pratt found themselves in an early 4-point deficit to start the first set. PCC slowly began to earn points and fight their way back in to the game. The lead started to change several times during the course of the set. Big blocks from the Beaver's front line gave them the edge during the latter half. Aggressive serves continued to keep Hutchinson out of system. Pratt held a lead several times and forced Hutchinson to take 2 late timeouts. The two teams eventually found themselves tied 23-23. Hutchinson pulled away to take the set with 2 kills for a final score of 25-23.

Home fans saw many of the same characteristics in the second set as they did the first. The second set also proved to be a back and forth battle. The Beavers trailed by as many as 5 points but capitalized on the high amount of mistakes and free balls that Hutchinson provided. PCC scored 15 kills during the second, but that was not enough to win the set. Hutchinson went on to have 4 different set points that were stopped by the Beavers. Pratt fell short in the set by another 2 point margin 26-28.

The Beavers continued the third set with the same amount of hustle and scrap as the first two, but could not find a way to put points on the board as they did previously. This was the only set that the Beavers did not hold a lead. PCC went on to drop the set 12-25.

PCC women's volleyball returns to the Dennis Lesh sports arena on Sep. 5. The match will be against conference foe Colby Community College at 6:30 p.m.
