VB drops conference opener in straight sets

PRATT, Kan.- Off the heels of a lone match, the Beavers immediately jumped in to conference play against the formidable Butler Community College Grizzlies. Three narrow sets did not fall Pratt's way however, as the Beavers fell to the Grizzlies 3-0.

The trio of Morgan Schrag (7), Kylee Harman (6), and Avery Smith (6) combined for 19 of Pratt's 24 kills. Schrag's knuckling service produced five aces on the offensive end.

Setting things up in the middle, Kylie Fletcher followed a 34-assist performance in the season opener with 23 on Monday. At the libero, Yianmarie Catala dug a team-high eight balls.

The first set seemed to have a domino effect on the Beavers, as Pratt opened the set trailing 13-8. Pratt answered with 10 straight points to take a 18-13 lead, though the Grizzlies quickly returned the favor. Eventually turning the tide to even the set at 22-22, Butler took three of the next four points to claim the first set 25-23.

The Beavers were unable to capture the consistency of the initial frame, narrowly dropping the concluding two sets.

Pratt returns to the court on Thursday, as the Beavers will travel a few miles up the road to play the Hutchinson Blue Dragons. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 pm start.
