Volleyball sweeps Indy in straight sets

PRATT, Kan.- A four-game losing streak was snapped on Thursday night, as the Beavers took the Pirates to task in a 3-0 win at the Beaver Dome.

Morgan Schrag posted 12 kills on 25 attempts (.360), as she also had a dig and an assisted block on the evening. Avery Smith was just behind Schrag, managing 11 kills on 21 tries (.333). Smith's right arm caused problems for the Pirates most of the night, as she also had three service aces. Brianna Ede and Katlyn Budenbender also provided an efficient attack, as Ede and Budenbender were a combined 11 of 22 on their attempted kills, including zero errors.

Kylie Fletcher and Nadja Bulatovic rotated at the setter position, as the pair combined for 34 of Pratt's 37 assists. Yianmarie Catala led the Beavers with 12 digs, while four other Beavers (Kylee Harman, Halley Perez, Kyra Johnson, and Kierra McGuire) all recorded five digs of their own.

After falling down 20-15 in the first set, the Beavers seemed to find the groove that carried them through the rest of the match. Independence opened the door for Pratt with a pair of consecutive errors, which followed with a Budenbender kill, a kill from Schrag, and a Pirate foul all added up to the tie the frame at 20-20.  The Beavers then reeled off another five consecutive points to close the first set on the heels of a 10-0 run.

The second set was close for much of its duration, but Pratt stamped its 20-19 lead with five-consecutive points to claim the second set. The Beavers jumped out to a 11-4 lead in what became the final set, though the Pirates would not go so quietly. The Pratt lead shrunk to a single point at 18-17, but as they did all night, the Beavers left no doubt, winning seven of the next eight points.

Volleyball returns to action on Monday, as the girls travel to Colby Community College. The match is scheduled for a 6:30 pm start.
